Flexibility with Attendance and Assignment Due Dates

Faculty Guidance: Flexibility with Attendance and Assignment Due Dates

This accommodation is approved for students with disabilities that are episodic in nature, where symptoms may occasionally interfere with class attendance or the timely completion of assignments.

Faculty Action Steps

Faculty should complete the applicable Flexibility Agreement Form(s) below to establish course-based parameters. These agreements help ensure consistency, transparency, and maintain the integrity of course expectations.

Accommodation letters, which include the student’s approved accommodations, are typically emailed at the beginning of the semester or after approval. Faculty should send the applicable form(s) directly to each student with the approved accommodation.  Faculty should also maintain a copy of the completed form(s) for their records.

Note: Parameters should be based on the nature of the course structure, not tailored to individual student circumstances. The same agreement should be applied to all students with this approved accommodation in the course.

What to Consider When Determining Parameters & Completing Forms

  • How much interaction is there between the instructor and students and among students?
  • Do student contributions constitute a significant component of the learning process?
  • Does the design of the course rely on student participation as a significant method for learning? Attendance and/or their assignment (project) contributions?
  • To what degree does a student’s failure to attend class or do an assignment on time compromise the educational experience of other students in the class?
  • What is the course attendance policy? What does the course description and syllabus say?
  • Is the attendance policy and late work or missed exams policy applied consistently? Are there exceptions to the policy made for extenuating circumstances, such as athletic travel or religious observation?
