Training
The Department of Accessibility Services (DAS) provides comprehensive ADA training tailored to meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff. Sessions can be customized based on participants’ roles and responsibilities, whether they support students in the classroom, coordinate events, or supervise employees, to ensure relevant and practical content. Trainings cover key topics such as disability rights under the ADA, reasonable accommodations, the interactive process, and inclusive practices in both academic and workplace settings. All offerings are designed to promote compliance, awareness, and a more inclusive Emory community. Below are a few examples of training topics. Course Offerings
Enhancing Accessibility for Events and Meetings
This training explores how to make campus events and meetings more inclusive and accessible. Participants will learn best practices for selecting accessible locations, creating inclusive announcements, and preparing for accessibility before, during, and after events. The session also highlights common accommodations based on disability type, guidance for hosting accessible virtual events, and universal design considerations.
Fundamentals of Student Accommodations (Faculty-Focused)
This session introduces faculty to the legal foundations of ADA and Section 504 as they relate to student accommodations. It covers how to interpret accommodation letters, faculty responsibilities in the interactive process, and strategies for balancing academic standards with access. The training also outlines when to refer students to the Department of Accessibility Services (DAS) and provides guidance on setting clear parameters that uphold the integrity of academic courses.
What Hiring Managers Need to Know about the ADA and Reasonable Accommodations
This training supports hiring managers in understanding their responsibilities under the ADA during recruitment and hiring. Topics include crafting ADA-compliant job descriptions, knowing what disability-related questions can be asked (and when), and ensuring equal access throughout the interview and onboarding process. Participants will gain clarity on how to provide reasonable accommodations during the hiring process.
Fundamentals of Disability in the Workplace
This session provides an overview of the ADA in the workplace, including how disability is defined and how employees may disclose a disability. Attendees will learn Emory’s responsibilities for providing reasonable accommodations and how to navigate requests, especially following medical leave. The session concludes with tips for creating a more inclusive workplace culture.
