Types of Accommodations
The Department of Accessibility Services (DAS) coordinates reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to academic programs, campus housing, and dining services.
All accommodations are determined on an individual basis. DAS engages in an interactive process with each student to understand their access needs and determine reasonable accommodations that align with the essential elements of courses, programs, and services.
Incoming students are strongly encouraged to apply for academic accommodations and submit all registration materials approximately eight weeks prior to the first day of class. This allows sufficient time for documentation review, the interactive process, and implementation of accommodations. All students may request accommodations at any point during the semester; however, accommodations cannot be applied retroactively. Academic accommodations support equal access to learning, participation, and assessment. Examples include, but are not limited to: Students may request housing accommodations at any time. However, it is recommended that requests and supporting materials be submitted by the dates below: February 15 June 1st Housing accommodations promote accessible living environments. Examples include, but are not limited to: If your housing request is approved, DAS will notify Housing staff. Housing will then determine a specific room assignment for you. Your accommodation will remain on file for as long as you live on campus; you will not need to reapply for approved housing accommodation. However, your room assignment may change from year to year. Students with housing accommodations are required to participate in the annual housing selection process each year. Housing staff should be contacted with questions or concerns about your room assignment and/or your housing contract. DAS should be contacted for accommodation-related concerns. All housing accommodation requests and approvals are contingent upon available space. While DAS engages in the interactive process and collaborates with Housing to implement approved accommodations, neither DAS nor Housing can guarantee the availability of a specific room type or location. If the approved accommodation cannot be immediately met due to space limitations, Housing will explore alternative options that meet the student’s needs to the greatest extent possible and place the student on a waiting list until the requested space is available. Students with documented disabilities, including allergies or medical and mental health conditions that impact dietary needs should submit their accommodation requests through DAS. DAS works collaboratively with the Dining Services team and encourages students to schedule a consultation with the campus dietician to learn more about available dining options and resources. DAS assesses requests for meal plan modifications on an individualized case by case basis. Emory Dining Services offers a variety of options to meet students’ nutritional needs. For information on special diets, food allergens, and wellness commitments, visit the Emory Dining Diet and Nutrition page. The Department of Accessibility Services (DAS) works with students experiencing temporary impairments due to injury or surgical recovery to establish reasonable short-term accommodation. Temporary impairments refer to non-recurring medical conditions of short duration (generally six months or less) that significantly impact a major life activity. Students requesting accommodations for a temporary impairment should complete the Student Registration Form and attach any supporting documentation. Documentation for temporary impairments should indicate the current impact of the condition and provide an estimated recovery time. If you are unable to access your housing due to an injury and need immediate assistance, DAS will prioritize your application and address your needs as soon as possible. In these cases, please also inform your housing staff immediately. Requests are reviewed Monday-Friday during regular business hours. Students experiencing short-term illnesses such as a cold or the flu who are requesting extensions or excused absences should seek assistance and speak to their faculty directly and/or contact their Academic Advisor. The Student Self-Service Absence Form is intended for use by students who wish to self-certify an absence from class at Emory College of Arts and Sciences. For courses taught in other Emory schools (e.g., Business, Nursing), please reach out to those faculties directly. In cases of bereavement or loss, missed midterms and finals, or to submit corresponding medical documentation, undergraduate ECAS students should email OUE Academic Advising for information on next steps. Students enrolled in other colleges should contact their instructor or Academic Advisor for support. Some students with temporary mobility impairments due to a broken leg or surgical procedure may qualify for transportation assistance arranged through DAS. Paratransit services are available for those students, faculty, and staff who qualify. Please call our office at (404) 727-9877; accessibility@emory.edu so that we can provide Paratransit with the requisite information. Important Dates:
