Am I Eligible for Accommodations?
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal civil rights law designed to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Title I of the ADA addresses employers’ responsibility to provide equal employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities. Emory is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals in the following categories:
- Enabling prospective employees an equal opportunity to participate in the application and hiring process.
- Enabling current employees with disabilities to perform their essential job functions.
- Offering employees with disabilities the same benefits and privileges of employment as provided to employees without disabilities.
A person is eligible for reasonable accommodations under the ADA, if they meet the ADA’s definition of disability:
- A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities
- This definition encompasses a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to physical, intellectual, psychiatric, sensory, neurological, and learning disabilities, as well as physical disfigurements.
- The impairment can be temporary, episodic, or long-term.
What Type of Documentation Does DAS Accept?
The type of documentation that is acceptable is dependent on a variety of factors:
- The type of disability/condition
- The urgency of the need for accommodation
- The employee’s access to medical documentation
